Dallas Cowboys: Time to make an “all in” move and sign Daniel Jones.
Cowboys Quarterback Solution: Daniel Jones.
The Dallas Cowboys have yet another chance to improve their roster this offseason. But does anyone think they will?
Daniel Jones was released from the New York Football Giants this week in a dramatic fashion in what appears to be the team’s attempt to avoid a $23 million injury guarantee for next season. In other words they can not afford to have this guy be injured as a member of the Giants.
On the field, he’s got 2,070 passing yards this season. His overall performance has not been lackluster to say the least. With 8 touchdowns and 7 interceptions and a completion rating of 63%. 6.1 yards per attempt. The stats are really nothing to balk at considering the struggles the Giants’ offense has endured this season, not all on the back of Jones.
We have written in previous commentary about how the Giants have not prepared an offense suited to Jones’ skillset.
He’s started more games this season (10) than Cooper Rush and Trey Lance have played in this season collectively, and has played in a playoff game.
Jones has also shown a dual threat ability by showing how well he can run the ball. This season, he’s tallied 265 rushing yards and 2 TD. In an offense that in my opinion (MYO) very underutilized him as a runner.
The Cowboys anemic rushing attack on the other hand has been a major concern. The team as a whole only has rushed for 817 yards all year, the QBs contributing for only 80 combined yards this season (Dak has 54, Rush has 9, Lance has 17).
Cooper Rush in his 6 appearances this season has 566 yards 0 touchdowns and a 57% completion rating with 4.8 yards per attempt.
Although Rush has shown over his tenure with the Cowboys his ability to adequately fill in when Dak is out, most fans would agree that when Dak has to miss extended time, the remainder of the season is in jeopardy, and holds little hope.
The addition of Daniel Jones in the long term could change that narrative. The backup quarterback position should be treated as a more important one than it really is. Bill Bellichick this season stated how he considered the Pittsburgh Steelers QB situation to be the best in the league. Dallas could bump themselves into that category with a singing like this.
